How to assess your roof after storm damage

Stormy weather can cause major damage to your property, with strong winds alone wreaking havoc with your roofing system.

After a storm, a roof’s primary aim of protecting a property hangs in the balance, with some hidden damage causing severe problems weeks or even months down the line. If your local area suffers from a wild storm and you are worried that your roof has become damaged as a result, a thorough assessment must be carried out to check its condition.

Our experts at Morgan Asphalte have put together a few top tips to help you spot any signs of damage after a storm so you know whether your roof needs repairing.

Missing roof tiles

Strong winds and thunderstorms can rip the tiles straight off your roof, exposing the material underneath to the elements. If you can see daylight through this missing tile when you are inside your property, there is an opportunity for water to filter in which can cause major water damage and rotting.

Fallen trees

Fallen trees and broken branches can cause considerable structural damage to your roof which can be extremely unsafe for the occupants of the building. If your property has fallen victim to a collapsed tree, you must make sure the building is evacuated and contact a professional roofing company immediately so they can inspect the damage and carry out the remedial action.

Check all components of the roofing system

While your roof tiles may appear in good condition, other parts of the roof may be suffering from hidden damage. With this in mind, make sure you inspect the following areas closely, keeping an eye out for cracks, tears and loose weather stripping:

  • Gutters
  • Fascia
  • Roof vents
  • Soffit

Leaks or water damage in your loft/attic

When inspecting a roof for damage, many focus on the roof itself and often overlook checking the interior of their property. In actual fact, leaks, water damage or water marks in your loft/attic can indicate a need for roof repairs or an entire roof replacement.

Dents in roof tiles

Hail can leave marks and dents in your roof tiles causing them to lose functionality and become more susceptible to rain and sun damage. A problem such as this needs to be addressed straight away so the damage can be corrected and your tiles can be restored back to top working condition.
